Govt proposes law to ensure better wages for seasonal hires

The
labour ministry may amend the Contract Labour (Regulation and
Abolition) Act, 1970 to protect wages and welfare benefits of contract
worker. It will allow labour commissioners and other appropriate
authorities to fix minimum wages for workers employed as seasonal hires.
Finmin may not tinker with corp tax rate

The
finance ministry may keep the corporate tax rate unchanged at 30%
because of stiff resistance from companies to the draft direct tax
code's proposal to cut the rate to 25% and remove all exemptions.
GoM nod for education tribunals

The
Bill to set up a National Accreditation Body, which will assess each
educational institution, and another to set up Education Tribunals,
which will consider disputes, were approved by the GoM headed by Sharad
Pawar and are likely to be taken to Parliament in the Budget Session.
New mines Bill likely to be tabled in Budget session

The
Mines and Mineral (Development & Regulation) Amendment Bill is
likely to be tabled in the coming budget session. The Bill shall
include provision for allotting blocks to the states via the government
route and for others through the auction route.
Bill late, govt tallying local rules with global a/c norms

government plans to amend existing rules rather than wait for a
comprehensive law to get Parliament’s approval to quicken the
transition towards a new global accounting standard that the country
must embrace by next year.
GST rollout to miss April deadline

UPA government’s proposed comprehensive indirect tax reform, goods and
services tax (GST), will miss its scheduled rollout from April 1,
2010. New dates for GST implementation will be decided in April.

Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily hinted that the Centre was
working out a proposal to amend the Right to Information Act relating
to the judiciary to make it more transparent.
