Govt hopeful of passing Budget by July 31: Chidambaram

Cabinet Minister P. Chidambaram and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that they hoped the Budget for 2009-10 could be approved by Parliament by July 31.

Smart cards to be issued to all citizens by 2011: Chidambaram

The government plans to initiate measures to ensure availability of multipurpose identity cards to all citizens by 2011.  The project aims at providing a unique national identity number to each person in the National Population Register.

Manmohan's Cabinet takes charge

New ministers took charge of their offices.  They include Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs, Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Environment and Forests, and Kapil Sibal, Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Nine UPA ministers have criminal cases against them

Nine ministers of the Congress-led UPA Government have criminal cases pending against them.  Seven of the ministers are from the Congress, while one each are from the DMK and the Trinamool Congress.
