The Judges
(Inquiry) Amendment Bill 2008 seeks to establish a National Judicial Council with
powers to investigate judicial complaints, including those regarding corruption
and misconduct and recommend suitable action.

Universities Bill, 2008 outlines a series of provisions to reform teaching and
research in the 16 new central universities to be set up under the legislation.

The Central
Universities Bill, 2008 seeks to convert three universities in different States
into central universities. It also establishes a central university in each of
the 12 remaining States.
ICAI audit norms to get legal status

The Companies
Bill, 2008, aims to make auditing standards statutory. Those audit firms that
do not follow these standards shall be punishable under the company law.
Amendment may make dowry law toothless

This amendment to the
Code of Criminal Procedure will allow the police to issue a 'notice of
appearance' to the accused under Section 498A of IPC (dowry harassment)
in stead of arrest, which has a minimum punishment of three years.
Cr.PC Amendment Bill gets President's assent
The Hindu, Jan 20
The Amendment Bill
states that the police can arrest a person, without a warrant, for
non-cognisable offences, for investigation.
The police will have to issue a “notice of appearance” for any offence
punishable with jail of up to 7 years. The arresting officer will be required to
bear an identification badge.
