Chidambaram for Ordinance on CISF cover to pvt sector

The amendment to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Act will allow extension of the CISF cover to private sector industrial units as well as Indian missions abroad on cost-reimbursement basis.

NIA will come into being from today: Chidambaram

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), being set up to investigate terror-related cases across the country, will come into force from January 1. A director-general level police officer shall be in charge. Along side the NIA, the Multi Agency Centre also became functional on a 24x7 basis.

National Council in offing to check hospitals

The Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Bill, 2007 lays down minimum standards for medical facilities and services.  It shall be monitored by a National Council, which shall set standards for the segment and classify clinical establishments.

Cabinet nod for hike in judges’ salaries

The Cabinet approved an ordinance that will increase the salaries of judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts.  This gives immediate effect to the Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 22, 2008.

Government to fast-track insurance Bills in Parliament

The Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2008 proposes to raise the Foreign Direct Investment limit in insurance companies from 26 per cent to 49 per cent and permit foreign re-insurers to open branches in India. The LIC Bill proposes to enhance the government-owned insurer’s paid-up equity capital to Rs 100 crore from Rs 5 crore.

Amendments to the National Commission for Minorities Educational Institutions Act 2004 (NCMEI Act)

Cabinet has given approval to the NCMEI Act, 2004. One of the important amendments is to increase the number of Members of the Commission, other than the Chairperson, from the existing 2 to 3 in order to enable the Commission to deal with the increasing number of matters before it. 

Companies Bill provision could be reviewed

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs is considering the amendment of some of the key provisions in the new Companies Bill, 2008. The standing committee wants to amend the provisions so that harsher norms could be introduced keeping in the light the Satyam fraud.

Establishment of new Central Universities

An Ordinance may be promulgated to operationalise the Central Universities Bill, 2008. The recommendations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee are likely to be incorporated in it.

Govt to form committee to look into drugs and cosmetics Bil
Economic Times, Jan 13

The health ministry is likely to form a high-powered committee to look into the concerns of drug manufacturers arising out of the Drugs and Cosmetics (Amendment) Bill, 2005. The Bill stipulates stricter penalties like life imprisonment and non-bailable arrest for manufacturing and selling spurious drugs.

NCW wants sexual harassment law to cover educational institutes

The National Commission for Women has proposed that educational institutions be recognised as ‘workplace’ and brought under the ambit of the Sexual Harassment at Workplace Bill.
