Centre proposes a bigger stick for Press Council to beat newspapers with
Indian Express, Nov 18

The Centre proposes to amend the Act that governs the Press Council of India, which include punishing newspapers that publish “objectionable material” by barring them from getting government advertisements.

Cabinet approves Notifications to the Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill, 2007

The Cabinet approved the modification of the Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill, 2007.  They include providing better protection to Indian trade marks in designated member countries and giving reciprocal protection to trade marks from member countries abroad. 

Uniform sales tax for jet fuel on cards

The Cabinet is likely to discuss a proposal to amend the Central Sales Tax Act to include aviation turbine fuel (ATF) in the list of declared goods.  It would restrict the power of state governments to levy sales tax on ATF beyond 4%.

Govt to finalise Broadcast Bill after receiving states' views

The government may take a decision on the Broadcast Bill once it receives comments from all states and Union Territories.  The Bill calls for regulation of television content and also proposes setting up of body to monitor content.

I&B to go for CAS expansion only after costs are lowered

The Information & Broadcasting ministry plans to expand the conditional access system after strengthening the regulatory mechanism and bringing down costs.  But it has not spelled out a deadline.
