The Cabinet
has given its approval for the introduction of the Insurance
(Amendment) Bill, 2008 to increase the upper cap of foreign direct
investment from the current 26 per cent to 49 per cent.

South Asian University Bill has received the Cabinet’s nod.
It plans to establish a South Asian University to provide world-class
facilities and professional faculty to students from SAARC member
countries.

The central government has given its nod to the
Right to Education Bill promising free and compulsory education for
children between 6-14 age group.
Govt to raise LIC's paid-up capital to Rs 100 cr

The Union Cabinet approved a proposal to table
a Bill in Parliament to increase the paid-up capital of state-run Life
Insurance Corporation from Rs 5 crore to Rs 100 crore to bring its
capital structure on a par with other players.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food,
Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution had recommended that all
mandatory municipal services, such as water supply, be included in the
Consumer Protection Act. However, the ministry is not in
favour of considering such a proposal.

on foreign funding

The Second Administrative Reforms Commission’s
report recommended that stronger laws are needed to check foreign
funding. The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976
should be amended so that organisations getting over Rs 10 lakh a year
as foreign contribution come under the scanner.

universities Bill unlikely to be tabled soon

The Foreign Educational Institutions
(Regulation of Entry and Operations, Maintenance of Quality and
Prevention of Commercialisation) Bill, 2007 that seeks to allow entry
of foreign universities in India may not be tabled in the Parliament
session scheduled in December because the ministry of human resource
development has not finalized rules for deemed universities.
