MLA through the Lok Sabha or the Niyama Sabha website and know about
the finer details like the MP’s attendance, performance and
participation in public affairs.Releasing documents on the
financial assets and criminal records of Kerala MPs, a Delhi-based NGO,
PRS Legislative Research, said that the Election Commission’s website
had all details based on the affidavits filed by the candidates.
The
PRS group and the Centre for Public Policy Research, Kochi chapter, had
organised a workshop for journalists on `Tracking the Activities of MPs
and MLAs’ here on Tuesday.One of the documents showed that seven
MPs from the state were charged under various sections of IPC. All of
them are the members of the Left Democratic Front.Kasargod MP P
Karunakaran has the maximum number of criminal cases charged against
him.Four
cases each have been charged against N N Krishnadas (Palakkad), S Ajaya
Kumar (Ottappalam), C S Sujatha (Mavelikkara) while one each against A
P Abdullakkutty (Kannur), P Seethadevi (Vatakara) and K Francis George
(Idukki), the document said.
Speaking on the occasion, PRS
research head Madhavan and analyst Chaksu Roy said that the public can
track the financial background of every MP and MLA if they go through
the election website and check the affidavits.Since there are
archives, one can just compare and see if there is any progress, they
said. They said that as far as the MPs performance in Parliament was
concerned, the Kerala representatives had fared very well.Interestingly,
the older MPs in Lok Sabha have performed better than the youngsters as
far as the country as a whole is concerned."We also do a lot of
research on upcoming Bills and debates and send them to the MPs. Those
who want to know more on the issue can contact us.We will
provide the research support. It is another thing that each of them use
the data to suit their own party lines,” Madhavan said.He said
that in countries like the US and the UK, there were congressional
research support experts to help the Senators prepare for various Bills.
Speaking
on the occasion, Chakshu Roy said that one could compare with the
previous affidavits filed by the candidates to know whether their
assets had increased. He was referring to the `Crorepati MPs’ of Delhi.
